The Awkward Art of Setting Goals
We’ve all had plans and goals that we set for ourself, but it can be a hard time sticking to them. There are goals that I have crushed and others that were abandoned or life had other plans. Some goals I watered like a new house plant, but then you lose focus and that plant sits in the corner crying for love and..water. Setting a goal is productive and grown-up – similar to buying a planner you promised yourself you would use. The tough battle of keeping the goal so you can win the war is awkward and hard, but this is where we grow.

Go Micro
At the beginning of the year, millions of people set out to lose weight. And a lot of times, I think the goal they plan for is too lofty and then the frustration and disappointment hits. Having big goals is great, but I think starting with “losing 5 lbs. in a month” can lead to a small victory that eventually tackles the overall goal. Start with baby steps.
For example, if my goal was to become a marathon runner, I wouldn’t start by running several miles a day. Ideally, I would start with something small and eventually work myself into running 5 miles or more. Just getting that first step in is a micro win that puts you in a rhythm to succeed.

Motivation is a Scam
Motivation is that spark that gets the fire started, but doesn’t keep it lit. This where making a promise to yourself is important. “I’m not negotiating with myself. I signed the contract with myself, I’m doing it,” is a quote from Kobe. Persistence and dedication are the keys to achieving goals. Failure happens when motivation wavers and we don’t feel like doing something we promised ourselves. This is when people give up. But keeping your promise is what will drive you to override feelings and push you towards your win.

Sticking to my goals is an everyday struggle, but I’m thankful because without it, the reward isn’t as great. If anyone has anymore thoughts on this I’d like to hear about it by leaving a comment. If you would like to read a similar post, then click here!
